About Dental Crown Placement

If your dentist recommends a dental crown, you may wonder what such treatment entails. It is always good to be aware of the steps you will experience during a medical procedure. Usually, the more you know the less fearful you are. That is why today we are going to explain the crown placement procedure. A dental crown procedure is a common, long-lasting, and effective treatment. So, read on to learn more about dental crown placement.

What is a Dental Crown?

You may be more familiar with the term “cap” than dental crown. Many people refer to the process as getting their tooth capped, because that is pretty much what happens. Your dentist caps your original tooth with a strong, protective, and esthetic dental crown. There are several materials to choose from when getting a crown, and your choice will depend upon where the tooth is and what sorts of dental forces it experiences. The most common materials include: metal (strongest), porcelain (most esthetic), porcelain-fused-to-metal (strong base, esthetic top layer), and zirconium (strong and esthetic).

Placing a Crown

Two visits are necessary when receiving crown treatment. The first visit will include:

Step #1: Your dentist will anesthetize the tooth and surrounding area.

Step #2: The decay or damaged portion of the tooth will be removed.

Step #3: An impression of the tooth will be made and sent to the dental lab.

Step #4: A temporary crown will be placed.

Visit #2:

Step #1: The temporary crown will be removed.

Step #2: The permanent crown will be tested for color and fit.

Step #3: The permanent crown will be cemented into place.
