Myths Vs. Facts: Is Your Toothbrush Clean?

Have you spent time wondering if you’ve been doing an okay job with your brushing? Once you figure out how to make the most of your dental hygiene sessions, do you then move on to additional concerns? Perhaps the latest on your list of thoughts about your smile follows: “Is my toothbrush clean enough?” Good news! It probably is. However, if it isn’t, there are some very easy fixes. Learn a bit more about how to keep this bristly hygiene product clean by considering a few myths and facts.

Myths Versus Facts: Your Toothbrush

Myth: It’s okay to keep using the same toothbrush as long as the bristles still look straight and firm. You only need a change once they seem frayed.

Fact: You want to protect your dental hygiene by making sure your brush isn’t old. Even if it isn’t looking worn yet, it will begin to harbor bacteria and wear out. Start fresh with a new toothbrush after three months pass.

Myth: You should be sterilizing your toothbrush, either in the microwave or in boiling water.

Fact: You don’t need to do this. Your dental hygiene will remain in good shape as long as you thoroughly rinse the bristles under water after you brush your teeth.

Myth: It’s best to keep your toothbrush in a travel case, so it is safe from additional bacteria.

Fact: Placing your toothbrush into any type of sealed or closed container is a bad idea. While you should probably not leave it face down on your countertop either, you should keep it out in the open. Store it bristles-up in a cup or stand, so it dries between uses.
