Ankeny Dentist Has Brushing Tips for Kids

When it comes to brushing their teeth, kids can sometimes be a bit careless. In their haste to finish the job, they often miss large areas of their mouths. But missing those areas allows bacteria to thrive and attack their teeth. Therefore, you want to make sure your child brushes properly all the time. Your Ankeny dentist, Dr. Erika Peddicord, shares some tips for teaching your child to brush properly.

Brushing Tips for Kids from Your Ankeny Children’s Dentist

Kids see brushing their teeth as a chore. Therefore, you might want to consider ways to make brushing more fun. For instance, the simple act of allowing your child to choose his or her own toothbrush and toothpaste can make a big difference. Just the right color or design on the toothbrush can make a significant difference. Another way to inject some fun into the process is to use your child’s favorite song as a brushing timer. Songs typically last around three minutes, which is a good duration for brushing, so set up some speakers and play a song while you and your child brush together.

With the process seeming like a little more fun, your next task is to make sure your child is brushing with the proper technique. Take up a position behind your child facing the mirror. This vantage point should make your child aware of your presence, encouraging him or her to do good work. The position should also give you a good view of how your child is brushing. You want to look for small, circular movements with the toothbrush on one or two teeth at a time. Also, be sure that your child brushes the front, back, and top surfaces of each tooth.
